Holidays 2020

Of course the holidays are different this year, and that applies to the library’s usual festivities as well.  We’re doing what we can to celebrate and give back this holiday season with community AND safety in mind.  We are not able to have our annual holiday open house (we will miss everyone’s beautiful cookies!!) but, we’ve come up with some outdoor, grab-and-go, and drop-in alternatives that should help us make it through the end of 2020!

Hometown Holiday Gift Basket Drawings – Mondays in December
We are sharing some hometown love with weekly holiday gift basket drawings, made up of items provided by local downtown businesses, as well as gift certificates, so you can shop local for a true hometown holiday.  To enter into the drawing, just fill out our entry form online or stop by the library to do it in person. Everyone who shares their library story will receive a Hot Chocolate Mug Brownie Kit (complete with Gibsonville mural mug – while supplies last) in addition to having their name entered into weekly gift basket drawings.

Open-air Open-house -10:00 AM to 4:30 PM on Saturday, December 5th
Join us at the Charlotte Hawkins Brown Museum. Families are invited to walk the newly installed Story Trail across the historic campus of Palmer Memorial Institute to read the classic children’s book “The Snowy Day.” Library staff will be on hand with free take-home holiday craft kits, reindeer ring toss, and free children’s books while supplies last.

Family Holiday Craft Kits – available all month for pick up at the library
December’s activity box is a pack of holiday crafts families can make together!
Pick up an activity box at the library (or contact us to set up a curbside pickup).
New activity available on the first of each month – activity kits are free for everyone.
Included in the box:  materials to make 2 different Christmas tree ornaments, plus everything you need to create a festive holiday-themed face mask.

Holiday Photo Booth – available all month long at the library
Come snap a festive selfie (or family photo!) at the library anytime during December.  Have some fun with it – take a pic with your favorite book or posing with the stack of gifts you just wrapped at our git wrapping station (details on that below!).
Of course, we’d love to see your pics, so tag us @gibsonvillelibrary if you post them on social media!
See Collin, one of our library staffers, in his holiday pose at the photo booth!

Community Gift Wrap Station – available all month long at the library
Come wrap those presents away from prying eyes (how else are you going to get it done – the kids are home ALL THE TIME!!!).  We have a big, open work surface and plenty of wrapping supplies available for you to use.
We also accept donations for the wrapping station, so if you need to downsize your supply stash, we will make them available for our neighbors to use.

Traditional Latin-American Holiday Posada – 6:00 PM on Friday, December 18th
Come celebrate and participate in a traditional holiday posada outside the library with:
Traditional songs—A piñata for the kids—Take-home craft kits—Traditional tamales and punch—Family holiday photos in our photo booth—Free books!
Children may come dressed as shepherds or angels if they like!
Face masks are required

Secret Santa Books – available all month long at the library
Take a look under our tree and you’ll find a treasure trove of free Secret Santa Books! These donated items are wrapped and ready for gifting – but aside from some hints on the gift tag, you won’t know what your Secret Santa book is until you unwrap and read!  There are also shelves of new and used but all FREE (unwrapped) books ready to become stocking stuffers or gifts for the readers on your list!

Give back by supporting our Community Pantry – ongoing, always available
First, thank you to everyone who has supported our community pantry by donating nonperishable food items, basic toiletries, and baby supplies. We have created a list of the items we hope to stock for our neighbors who need them here.
This is an ongoing effort at the library, so we will need your support during the holiday season and beyond!
